Hello, I'm Eva, the analyst of the week. It is my duty this week to analyze the whole process of construction of the game, as well as being critic with what could be done better, what was difficult or easy and how did we like this activity.
This activity has been the longest one we've ever done, we spent two week designing, creating and testing our game. During this week, we had to complete different mini-tasks. The first thing we had to do, of course, is playing a game in order to analyze how it worked, what was its aim, how could we adapt it to a primary students' level. Without a doubt, this was the best part of our activity. It was also a way to let loose in between tasks, which we were grateful for.
After that, it was time to do a brainstorming. With the help of our teacher and a webpage that mixed different games with topics, we started bringing ideas onto the table. In the begining, our game was based on Jenga, mixed with questions needed to be answered. That was our first draft of the game.
The nest few classes were for both finalisying the main idea of our game and starting to create the materials needed for it. We created the instructions, the cards with questions, and a roulette that, unfortunately, didn't make the final game.
Lastly, we tested the game among our group, where we realised some mistakes that needed fixing such as who starts the game, how to gain points, what are the requirements for winning, etc. Once those mistakes were fixed, our star played it with Wildcats in class while we tested another group's game.
During this experience, we realised how hard it is to create a game, specially when we have such a great amount of games already in the market. We needed to include the learning objectives, the correct design, that it has a clear objective, that it is adapted to a certain level, and obviously that it's fun. Another aspect we needed to take into account was the learning objective that we needed to include. Maybe we should have started with the objective and base our game on that. That's something that should have been done differently. However, we started with a draft of our game and then tried to fit an objective to what we had in our minds.
I have to say that this task must have been the one we, as a group, have enjoyed best. Maybe because we got to play and have fun rigth at the begining. Also, the fact that the task was to create a game and play it afterwards was specially appealing to us. We were always ready to make suggestions in order to improve it, to make it funnier.
In one of the previous task, our teacher higlighted to us that we needed to take a look at the curriculum to understand what content are the kids learing in each level. That was one advice we have really taken into account in this task, so we could create the questions age and level appropiate.
We have understood how important it is for students to learn in different ways, and this resource is a fantastic way. we learn better and faster when we are motivated, having fun, entertained. what better way to do it than by playing an instructive game?
